Aug 11,12 -Project exhibition at Alva’s Institute Of Engineering And Technology…

Moodbidri: The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) will organise the 46th series of the State level student project programme, seminar and project exhibition at Alva’s Institute Of Engineering And Technology, Moodbidri for two days from August 11.

The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) was founded in the year 1975 with a view to utilize the scientific and technical expertise of a large number of scientists, technologists and engineers in the state to improve the living standards of people and reduce disparity through S & T interventions. Housing, Energy, Environment, Water and Waste management were some of the sectors that were initially identified by KSCST for improved and efficient management through S & T interventions.

Some of the success stories arising from the activities of the Council include – Design of novel biogas plants, solar collectors, solar pond, gasifiers, design of high efficiency cooking stove (ASTRA Ole), setting up of rural energy centers, innovative use of sisal plant etc. The recent major initiatives of the Council for societal benefits include rainwater harvesting, geospatial technologies for informed decision-making, rejuvenation of traditional water harvesting systems, watershed management, digital mapping of heritage sites, energy program including bioenergy activities, conceptualisation & demonstration of E-learning centres in high schools, patent information cell and other S & T activities.

Apart from playing a catalytic role in the implementation of sustainable technologies to society-centric problems/ issues, the Council has also been promoting research, development and innovation in universities and institutions. Additionally, interactive meetings with State S & T Councils and State Departments of Science and Technology have been organized on a regular basis.

STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAM (SPP)

Recognizing the need for innovation and technology, the Council initiated the student project program, popularly known as SPP, as early as 1977. The main purpose of this program is to bring out the hidden talent and innovative spirit in the

minds of young engineers graduating from colleges across the State. Under this program, KSCST has been providing both technical and financial support to selected projects undertaken by the final year BE, M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Tech/M.Sc. (Agriculture) & M.B.A. students of institutions and universities in the state. Thus, the Council has been playing a crucial role in building confidence and enhancing the capabilities of engineers graduating from the colleges in the State.

Since its inception in 1978, the Council has supported more than 15,300 projects under this Program. The success of this program is mainly due to excellent co-operation which the Council (KSCST) has been receiving from different departments of the Government and the scientific community in different research institutions of Karnataka, particularly from Indian Institute of Science and National Aerospace Laboratories.

46th edition of Student Project Programme: State Level Seminar and Exhibition

This is the 46th edition of SPP – Seminar and Exhibition series being conducted uninterruptedly since its inception. We are delighted that Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodubidire is hosting this major event this year. Under the 46th Series of SPP, the Council received 5,961 project proposals and after evaluation supported 1,494 projects of 197 engineering institutions across the state. During mid-term evaluation of these projects conducted during May-June 2023, KSCST has selected 443 projects for state level seminar and exhibition. Among the selected 443 projects, 204 are selected for presentation in the seminar and 239 are selected for exhibition. Out of the projects sanctioned in this 46th series, 45 projects are related to Biofuels / Bioenergy which were provided with financial and technical support by the Karnataka State Biofuels Development Board and the best 21 projects has been selected for Seminar and Exhibition.

We hope that this state level Seminar and Exhibition will inspire students to be more innovative and build an “innovative society” to accomplish the objectives of the Program. KSCST has identified and supported 27 projects as potential projects for industrial commercialization and prototype development under Faculty Project Program. The Council intends to support a greater number of projects having potential for commercialization this year.

Around 800 engineering students and more than 150 engineering faculties from the selected 443 projects will be participating in this programme. The projects will be evaluated by around 25 experts from the IISc, NAL, CMTI and other R&D Institutions. Among these, about 75 projects will be awarded as “Best Project of the Year” and the best performing college will also be awarded. The awards will be presented during valedictory function.

The program is being inaugurated on 11th August 2023 at 10.30 am by
